January 9, 2009 –Storing and Handling Cable Ties in Extreme Weather

In the winter months, temperatures fall and cable ties may become brittle, and difficult to use. Waytek has released best practices to help keep cable ties performing to their maximum potential in cold weather.

Handling & Storage

• Store cable ties in their original packaging until ready for use. Keep boxes and bags sealed!
  


• If product is opened but not completely used, store the remainder of the product in a poly bag and seal, if possible.
  


• When ever possible, store cable ties under "normal" environmental conditions until ready for use.
  


• Avoid extended storage in extreme heat or cold. If cable ties are being stored in extreme conditions, it is best to allow ties to "normalize" to the environment prior to installation.

• If cable ties become brittle, they usually can be returned to their "normal" state by adding just a few drops of water to the bag, sealing it and allowing them to sit for approximately 12 hours. Please note that too much water may cause the ties to lose tensile strength. If cable ties do not return to "normal" state, please call the Waytek Sales Department immediately (800-328-2724).

Application

• We recommend that cable ties be applied in above freezing temperatures. If the ties are being stored in below freezing conditions, they should be allowed to "normalize" prior to installation. Once the cable tie is applied, it can be exposed to subzero temperatures for extended periods of time.
  


• Install cable ties within their rated bundle diameter and tensile strength.
  


• The use of an installation tool is recommended, but not required.
  


• Care should be taken when applying cable ties by hand so that the pull up force is not more than twice the rated tensile strength, and that the cut-off method does not exert extreme torque on the locking mechanism.
